Mountain sports and mountain hiking
Whether you engage in specialised mountain sports or mountain hiking for pleasure and health, we want you to have the insurance coverage you need.
In general, accidents to people are covered by leisure time accident insurance and damage to equipment is covered by contents insurance and comprehensive contents insurance.
Insurances
- Home insurance includes a leisure-time accident insurance, which covers bodily injury caused by accidents that occur during leisure time and while participating in recreational sports. Children who participate in competitive sports are covered under the family’s leisure-time accident insurance until the age of 18.
- Accidents that occur during activities such as rappelling, rock climbing, mountaineering, and ice climbing are excluded from the leisure-time accident insurance, as are accidents that happen during any type of mountain hiking at altitudes over 4,000 meters above sea level. In most cases, it is possible to purchase additional insurance by contacting us.
- Home insurance includes liability insurance. Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage that you cause to a third party, for which you may be held liable under Icelandic tort law.
- Equipment used in general mountain sports is considered part of household belongings. Home insurance covers household belongings against fire, theft, and water damage. If your Home insurance includes comprehensive contents insurance for household belongings (which is optional), the equipment is also insured against damage caused by sudden and unforeseen external events.
- If you plan to engage in mountain sports or hiking abroad, we recommend purchasing travel insurance.
- If you own particularly valuable outdoor equipment, where the value exceeds the compensation limits in the comprehensive contents insurance, it’s best to contact us so we can review the matter together.
General Information
- If the family has leisure-time accident insurance, it applies when you participate in recreational sports. Children involved in competitive sports are also covered under the family's leisure-time accident insurance until the age of 18. Therefore, we recommend accident insurance for competitive athletes who are 18 years and older.
- Home Insurance offers you to choose from two different coverage limits and three different deductibles amounts. The selected coverage amount determines the maximum compensation for damages. The cost of insurance varies based on the selected deductible amount. The higher the deductible amount, the cheaper the insurance.
- Home insurance covers you, your spouse or cohabiting partner, and your unmarried children and foster children who share the same legal residence in Iceland. The insurance also applies to your children under the age of 18 who have a different legal residence in Iceland.
- The main advantage of having both credit card travel insurance and home insurance travel coverage is that if the maximum compensation amount is reached under one policy, the other insurance can step in, in the case of extensive damage or loss.
- In case of theft, insurances only apply if general precaution is taken to prevent items from being stolen.
- We advise our customers to keep their payment receipts, so that they can be provided in the event a claim needs to be filed.
