More About Dog Loss of Use Insurance

  • Period of purchase: When a dog is between the age of 8 weeks and 5 years.
  • Insurance amount: The insurance amount of the Dog Loss of Use Insurance is equal to the dog's life insurance amount, less ISK 50,000. The insurance amount will remain unchanged until the dog reaches the age of 7 years, after which it will decrease by 20% annually.
  • Duration: Once the dog reaches the age of 10, the insurance is cancelled and will not be renewed. If compensation is paid out of the dog's loss of use insurance, life insurance and health insurance will be canceled from the date of the accident. If you want these insurances to be valid for the dog, you must er-apply for them. Please note that life- and health insurances are only available if the dog is younger than 5 years old. If liability insurance and care insurance are active on the date of the accident and benefits from loss of use insurance are paid, the liability and care insurances will continue to apply.

It is necessary to include a certificate from a veterinarian about the general health of the dog when you buy this insurance. The certificate must be less than 30 days old and the veterinarian must prepare the certificate on a form provided by VIS. It is not sufficient to submit a vaccination certificate or a certificate from an animal quarantine facility.

Breeding | The insurance covers

  • If a dog loses fertility due to disease of the uterus, ovaries, prostate or testicles.
  • If two sperm counts performed at least 6 months apart show that a male dog is infertile.
  • If a dog can no longer be used for breeding due to hip loss, hip arthritis, elbow misalignment or elbow arthritis. It is a condition of cover that the dog has had a loss of use insurance with VIS continuously from at least four months of age.
  • If a bitch does not become in pup after mating with two previously fertile dogs.

Breeding | The insurance does not cover

  • Loss of use due to pre-existing diseases or accidents that occurred before the insurance took effect.
  • Loss of use for a bitch that has given birth to puppies three times.
  • Loss of use for a dog that has reached the age of 6 and never had puppies.
  • Loss of use due to mental illness, behavioural disorders or temperament problems.
  • Loss of use due to an accident caused by a dog being tied to a vehicle, loose in a vehicle or abandoned in a vehicle.

Specially trained dogs | The insurance covers

  • If a dog demonstrably and permanently loses the qualities that are necessary so that it can perform its specially trained role, due to an illness or accident.

Specially trained dogs | The insurance does not cover

  • Loss of use due to pre-existing diseases or accidents that occurred before the insurance took effect.
  • Loss of use due to diseases that a dog gets within 14 days of the insurance taking effect.
  • Loss of use for a dog that can no longer be used for its specially trained role due to hip displacia, arthrosis of the hip, elbow displacia, arthrosis of the elbow, or osteochondrosis.
  • Loss of use due to infectious hepatitis.
  • Loss of use due to mental illness, behavioural disorders or temperament problems.
  • Loss of use due to an accident caused by a dog being tied to a vehicle, loose in a vehicle or abandoned in a vehicle.
