Domestic medical cost
Domestic medical cost is short-term insurance that is valid for three months, until an individual becomes entitled to coverage from the Icelandic Health Insurance. The insurance is compulsory for foreign nationals who come to Iceland temporarily for work or study.
The insurance takes effect when a foreign national has been issued a residence permit or work permit by the Directorate of Immigration, or when an Icelandic citizen has registered their legal residence in Iceland.
An individual may be entitled to coverage from the Icelandic Health Insurance, without a three-month waiting period, if the individual moves to Iceland from another country within the European Economic Area (EEA), Greenland or the Faroe Islands.
The insurance covers
-
Cost of hospitalization and general medical care outside hospitals.
-
Cost of necessary examinations and treatments by specialists.
-
Cost of regular prescription medication as well as other necessary medication costs.
The insurance does not cover
-
Costs that the insured is entitled to from public health insurance in Iceland or abroad.
-
Costs due to accidents that occurred before the insurance took effect or illness that showed symptoms prior to the insurance taking effect.
-
Costs related to pregnancy or childbirth.
-
Costs due to accidents in high-risk sports, riots or participation in criminal activity.
