Mopeds or light motorcycles
Category I light motorcycles are a convenient mode of transport used by many people. They are neither subject to mandatory insurance nor registration. It is therefore important to make sure you have the right insurance coverage before heading out on the road.
In general, accidents to people are covered by leisure time accident insurance, while damage to the light motorcycle is covered by contents insurance and comprehensive contents insurance.
Further information on the rules that apply to category I light motorcycles can be found on the website of the Icelandic Transport Authority.

Insurances
-
Home insurance includes leisure time accident insurance, which covers bodily injury resulting from accidents during leisure time or while participating in general sports and recreational activities. The accident insurance only covers people insured under the policy and does not cover passengers or other people who borrow the light motorcycle.
-
Home insurance includes contents insurance. Contents insurance covers your light motorcycle against fire, theft and water damage.
-
If your home insurance includes comprehensive contents insurance, which is optional coverage, the light motorcycle is also covered for damage caused by sudden and unforeseen external events.
-
Home insurance includes liability insurance. Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage that you cause to another person while using the light motorcycle, provided that you are legally liable for the damage under Icelandic tort law.
General information
-
Riders must be at least 13 years old and are required to wear a helmet.
-
The speed restriction must not be tampered with to increase the light motorcycle’s maximum speed beyond 25 km/h. If this is done, it is no longer classified as a Category I light motorcycle and is therefore no longer covered under Home Insurance.
-
In case of theft, insurance coverage only applies if reasonable precautions have been taken to prevent the light motorcycle from being stolen.
-
Home Insurance offers a choice of two different coverage limits and three different deductible amounts. The selected coverage limit determines the maximum compensation payable in the event of a claim. The higher the deductible, the lower the insurance premium, but the greater the amount you will have to pay yourself in the event of a claim.
-
Home Insurance covers you, your spouse or cohabiting partner, and your unmarried children and foster children who share your legal domicile in Iceland. It also covers your children under the age of 18 who have a different legal domicile in Iceland.
-
We advise our customers to hold on to their payment receipts so that they can be presented if a claim needs to be filed.
