Vehicle liability damage that is partly covered
Information for claimant
In our assessment, both drivers were partially at fault for the accident. Your damage will therefore be partly compensated by the mandatory vehicle insurance of the other party, who is insured with VIS. This means that VIS will only pay part of the cost of the damage to your vehicle.
Below we have compiled information about the next steps that we hope you will find useful.
Comprehensive insurance
If you have comprehensive insurance with another insurance company, it is easiest for you to use your own insurance and then get a percentage of the deductible reimbursed by VIS after the repairs. This is a simple way to settle the matter.
After the repairs, you can send us a copy of the repair invoice to tjon@vis.is along with bank details.
The email must include the license plate number of your vehicle.
If you request a proportional refund for a rental car, it is best to include that information in the email along with the invoice and bank details.
We suggest that you contact your insurance company, which will assist you with the next steps.
If you have comprehensive insurance with VIS, it is also easiest for you to use that insurance and pay the percentage of the deductible that you need to pay at the workshop following the repairs.
If you did not inform us during the notification process that you wished to use your comprehensive insurance in the event that you were found at fault, please contact us.
If you informed us during the notification process that you wished to use your comprehensive insurance, you have already received an email or an SMS to confirm that comprehensive insurance is available. It is best to follow the instructions given there.
If there is no comprehensive insurance, we have compiled information about the next steps below.
Damage inspection and repairs
If the vehicle is not drivable and possibly beyond repair, we would like to receive that information as soon as possible. We will then transport the vehicle to VIS Damage Inspection at Smiðshöfði 3-5. If you feel that this information is not clear enough in the claim notification or police report, we ask that you contact us and let us know where the vehicle is located. Our damage inspectors will then do their best to locate and examine the vehicle and consult with you on how to proceed.
If the vehicle is drivable and able to be repaired, we have summarised the next steps below.
Damage inspection of vehicles is carried out at authorised workshops that have a contract with VIS. The workshop will assess whether the vehicle can be repaired and how much the repairs will cost. Please note that VIS will only pay a portion of the cost of the repairs.
You can choose any workshop that you like from the list. You must contact VIS if you prefer workshops that are not on the list*.
As soon as the vehicle arrives at the workshop, VIS will be in communication with the workshop on how to proceed.
The workshop will examine the damage, take photos, prepare a repair estimate and send it to VIS for approval. Since you will pay a portion of the cost, you also need to approve the workshop's estimate.
If it is decided to repair the vehicle, the workshop will assign you a time for the repairs.
We recommend that you make sure that the necessary spare parts are available before beginning any repairs, especially in the case of a drivable vehicle.
If you do not wish to have the vehicle inspected for damage and sent for repairs at an authorised workshop, it is possible to receive negotiated compensation. In such cases, it is best to bring the vehicle to VIS Damage Inspection at Smiðshöfði 3-5 and speak with our damage inspectors. This solution is common when there is no comprehensive insurance and only part of the cost of the damage is covered.
Rental car
You are entitled to receive a rental car of the smallest model while your vehicle is not in drivable condition.
Please note that, as in the case of the repair costs, VIS will only pay a portion of the cost of the rental car.
The right to a rental car covers normal waiting time for spare parts and normal repair time.
It is necessary to contact VIS if it looks like the repair time and/or waiting time for spare parts will be longer than 21 days.
Frequently, the workshop will be able to provide you with a rental car when the vehicle is brought i for repairs, but you can also book a rental car yourself.
Was anyone injured?
If the unfortunate event that you or others were injured in the collision, we would like to remind you that the accident must be reported separately.
Good luck!

*According to the principles of tort law, the claimant has the right to be compensated in full. At the same time, it is the responsibility of the claimant to limit their damage as well as seek the most cost-effective way to repair their vehicle. This means that the claimant, who chooses to have their vehicle repaired by a workshop that does not have a contract with VÍS, must inform VÍS about it and the estimated cost of the repair before the repair is carried out. Informing VÍS about these matters is the claimant fulfilling their duty to limit the damage and giving VÍS the opportunity to compare the estimated cost of repairing the vehicle to the average price in the market area in which the workshop in question is located. VÍS will inform the claimant if the cost is generally higher than that market area. If the estimated repair cost of a workshop, which does not have a contract with VÍS, is higher than the average price of a workshop in the market area, VÍS refuses to pay for the repair and points the claimant to a workshop that they can contact and thus limit their damage.
