European Health Insurance Card

  • The European Health Insurance Card entitles the cardholder to healthcare services in other EEA countries, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

  • The cardholder pays the same fee for healthcare services as those insured under the public health system of the respective country.

  • The card is only valid with public healthcare providers, not with private clinics or private hospitals.

  • In addition to costs incurred at private clinics and private hospitals, all medical transport is also excluded from the European Health Insurance Card.

  • It is possible to check whether such costs are covered by the travel insurance (cover in home insurance) or credit card insurance, if such coverage is in place.

  • It is easy to apply for the European Health Insurance Card at island.is.
